Cleanup Binaries in Git History

Git

It is considered bad etiquette to track binary objects without the use of LFS, this significantly impacts the performance of the repository for all participants. git Large File Storage replaces larger files with text pointers inside git while storing the actual files differently to prevent significant growth of the history. LFS was created by github, it is an open source project. There are other systems for handling large binary data with git, such as git-annex, but lfs has gained the most traction. ...

This post is essentially archiving the discussion here. I’ve been reading through other threads and attempting to get this working. My objectives are: Fedora Silverblue Host: W6600 connected to four displays via displayport Audio via USB DAC (no need for W6600 audio capabilities) Guest: 6800XT connected to single display via HDMI USB-C passed to guest, with USB-C based hub for keyboard+mouse+headset Mostly Linux guest, and mostly headless for vulkan accelerated containers Windows guest for some games This might be the first silverblue focused post on here? ...

UID(s), GID(s), and systemd

Containers
Systemd, Podman

Recently was fiddling more with systemd+podman deployments and was wondering why I didn’t get output when running journalctl --user. This had been bothering me for a long time. I’d open another shell up and watch the journal as root on a system when I was trying to debug a “daemonized rootless-as-non-root” deployment. The goal of putting all context for an application deployment into a user slice was mired with a need to watch the root journal… ...

This “book” idea is something I’d been meaning to get into for a long while. Originally I’d reached out to Lochnair with the idea as he’d helped me through some vy{os,atta}-isms when I’d first started messing around with EdgeOS. The gap between my fumbling around and his intuition for how these complex systems interact was inspiring. Some years later I’ve been afforded the opportunity to check off many items on the learning to-do list, enough that I should openly document some things. ...

Supermicro X10/X11 Idiosyncrasies

Hardware
Supermicro

We’d standardized on the Supermicro X10SRH-CLN4F a set of deployments a while back, the last of our X10 deployments, and these boards are still kicking around with enough idiosyncrasies that it’s worth documenting. This is an uncomfortable generation of boards from Supermicro that support a lot of interesting new features, but not as easily as X11 or H11. For example you have to do most things via DOS on X10, but on X11+ and H11+ almost all hardware operations are handled via built in EFI shell. ...

Linux on the X1 {Carbon Gen7, Yoga Gen4}

I’d written [about using the t470s]({{ref 2017-04-14-linux-on-the-t470s}}) a while back, since then jumping to a T480s, T480, and most recently an X1 Yoga Gen4 and X1 Carbon Gen7. These two machines are extremely small and have good manufacturing feel to them. The major downside to them is the limited memory (16G) and the thermal dissipation. Ultimately I’ve become more comfortable with the X1CG7 as there wasn’t a need for me to use the touchscreen/stylus with the X1YG4. ...
